With Impact X, Velodyne Acoustics presents a new subwoofer series characterized by outstanding performance and great versatility. Both the ten-inch and twelve-inch models feature a newly developed long-throw driver and powerful amplifiers using MOSFET Class D technology. The integrated high-resolution DSP from Analog Devices offers four practical sound presets, allowing the user to immediately respond to different application scenarios. Preset selection and the most important subwoofer parameters can be conveniently controlled from the listening position using the supplied remote control.
The subwoofers of the Impact series from Velodyne Acoustics have long been highly regarded in professional circles. With sophisticated DSP presets, newly developed drivers, and impressive MOSFET Class D amplifiers, the new Impact X 10-inch and Impact X 12-inch models once again set standards.
Impact X: Velodyne Acoustics through and Through
For more than 35 years, the name Velodyne Acoustics has stood for the highest bass precision, and the new Impact X series impressively demonstrates that this can also be achieved with relatively compact enclosures – provided the necessary know-how and experience. The new series comprises two models and is thus literally well-equipped for every conceivable application: The ten-inch subwoofer Impact X 10″ integrates into smaller living spaces with enclosure dimensions of just 32 x 36 x 40 centimeters, while the Impact X 12″ with its twelve-inch driver provides more than enough reserves for large rooms and generously sized home theaters. Both models are designed as front-firing subwoofers, with the downward-firing, noise-optimized bass reflex port ensuring fascinating depth. Newly developed drivers, perfectly tuned DSP processors, and powerful Class D amplifiers with 180-volt MOSFET technology guarantee powerful, ultra-deep, and at the same time highly precise bass reproduction.
Efficient Drivers of the Highest Precision
The driver is one of the most important – if not the most important – factors in the development of a subwoofer, and so the new Impact X models from Velodyne Acoustics also use a completely newly developed chassis. The two-inch voice coil made of four layers of high-purity copper is driven by a powerful ferrite double magnet for maximum efficiency, which, together with the flexible surround made of nitrile rubber, allows for an excursion of up to 25 (10-inch model) or 28 (12-inch model) millimeters. The stable basket, together with the centering made of cotton-polyester composite material, ensures the highest precision even during impressive bass storms. The lightweight yet rigid paper cone guarantees accurate transient reproduction with minimal partial oscillations.
Reliable DSP Control and Innovative MOSFET Class D Amplifiers
For maximum control and highest operational safety even at full load, the new Impact X subwoofers are controlled by powerful high-resolution DSPs from the renowned manufacturer Analog Devices. The algorithms used come from the experienced subwoofer specialists at Velodyne Acoustics, and the same applies particularly to the amplifiers: The Class D amplifiers of the Impact X subwoofers use no less than four 180-volt MOSFET transistors with an impressive current delivery capability of 34 amperes, and the efficient switching power supply was also designed around two 17 ampere / 650-volt MOSFET transistors. The result of these developments is effortless power delivery even with fast energetic impulses, which, together with the precise drivers, provides a superlative bass experience. The performance data of the Impact X subwoofers speak for themselves: The ten-inch model delivers 250 watts continuous and 500 watts peak power, while the 12-inch subwoofer impresses with a solid 300 and 600 watts respectively.
Practical Sound Presets and Convenient Remote Control
The new Impact X series goes far beyond the usual parameters of volume, crossover frequency, and phase in its adjustment options. The engineers at Velodyne Acoustics have provided four practical sound presets for different applications: “Flat” offers the greatest deep bass content, while “Movie” is designed for maximum output power in heroic films, and “Rock / Pop” features a frequency response optimized for these music genres. The “Night Mode” limits bass reproduction, thus ensuring a long-term friendly relationship with the neighborhood. The selected preset is displayed on the front panel of the Impact X subwoofers. The supplied elegant remote control allows not only switching between sound modes but also convenient adjustment of crossover frequency, volume, and phase from the listening position. Additionally, the display of the Impact X subwoofers can be dimmed remotely.
Stable Enclosures and Wide Range of Connections
The new Impact X subwoofers are made from extra thick MDF material for maximum resonance-free performance, and the elastomer isolation feet provide efficient decoupling from the floor. The Impact X subwoofers from Velodyne Acoustics can be easily connected to their source devices via RCA inputs for left and right channels, and the corresponding output sockets allow for trouble-free connection of additional subwoofers. Using cable terminals, it is also possible to integrate the high-quality long-throw drivers into systems where the amplifier or AV receiver does not have a suitable RCA output. The Impact X subwoofers can automatically turn on when a signal is detected, and volume, crossover frequency, and phase can be adjusted both on the rear panel and via the included remote control.
